Enclave, Ann Aguirre

"For fans of the Hunger Games!"
In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning. (Full description here.)

I agree with that. But, hear me out, don't think it's just like the Hunger Games. It's nothing like the Hunger Games, but it's still full of action--and violence, just like the Hunger Games. But that's just it. There are no kid-to-kid combat scenes. Except once, but it's only about a page long and it's just for the slight entertainment of the College enclave.

So, the time set is in the future after everyone in the world (or just everyone in North America, not sure about the rest of the world) is dead. They all got sick from some kind of medicine and the rest got sick over time and died. Everyone that is still living lives in the sewers/subway systems. They live in enclaves*. There are lots of enclaves hidden around the sewer systems and trading goes on between each. Between the enclaves there is just darkness and monsters called Freaks.

Freaks are not zombies, although the way their described, that's kind of how they look. No one knows how they got to be monsters but they've never really been a big problem so everyone just kind of lets them be and if they get to close to an enclave, Hunters take them out.

The enclaves are divided into three groups. There are Builders (they build things for the different groups); Breeders (obviously they keep up the population); and Hunters and Huntresses (they take care of the Freaks and bring back food for the enclave). Everyone in the enclave gets trained for a certain group and their group is picked when they're fifteen. The kids that are younger than fifteen are nicknamed brats. Each brat gets a number and specifically they're called "Girl15" or "Girl26", or "Boy17".

The main character is a girl, and her name is Girl15 until her own ceremony on her fifteenth birthday and she gets the name Deuce and she's labeled a Huntress.

So Deuce is an awesome main character, in my opinion. She strong willed and strong in every other way. She fights her own battles and doesn't let anyone (or any Freak) get the best of her. That's why she's the best Huntress. Even when she's paired up with the Fade, the crazy, closed off, quiet stranger that becomes a part of her enclave (the College enclave) after being lost in the dark for years. Deuce is quiet and reserved when she doesn't want or need anything, but once she wants something she won't give up on it.

The second main character is Fade. Like I said in Deuce's paragraph, he joined the College enclave after many years of wandering the dark, fighting off Freaks. When he gets to the enclave, they decide his fighting skills are worth keeping so instead of killing him like they do to other strangers. They institute him as a Hunter and before Deuce gets partnered up with him, he'd already been through two other partners. Fade is beyond mysterious but he's not really rude or anything. No one tries to talk to him. So that's Fade. Tall, dark, mysterious Fade.

So I can't say much because if I say anything I'll give it all away. All I have to say is that they meet a girl named Tegan and they go on an epic adventure. I can't say anything but I really want to! All I can say is that you need to read this if you like action and adventure books. You need to read this if you like any books!
